Why Watersheds Matter: A Smarter Approach to Protecting Family Farms and Rural Communities

As these changes occur, one question becomes increasingly important:

How do we ensure that agricultural growth remains sustainable for future generations?

At the Veterans & Young Farmers Alliance (VYFA), we believe the answer begins with understanding the landscape itself.

Looking Beyond Farm Size

Discussions about environmental review often focus on the size of a farming operation. While the number of animal units or acres under production is one factor worth considering, it does not tell the entire story.

Every farm operates within a unique environment. Two farms of identical size may have very different environmental risk profiles depending on factors such as:

• Watershed characteristics

• Soil composition

• Groundwater vulnerability

• Local topography

• Existing agricultural activity in the surrounding region

• Manure management practices

• Weather patterns and precipitation

A one-size-fits-all approach may overlook these important differences.

Why Watersheds Matter

A watershed is an area of land where rainfall and snowmelt drain into a common river, lake, stream, or groundwater system. Activities occurring throughout a watershed can influence water quality far beyond the boundaries of a single property.

When multiple agricultural operations exist within the same watershed, their combined effects may differ from the impact of any one operation considered independently.

Understanding these cumulative conditions helps support better planning, stronger conservation efforts, and more informed decision-making.

Supporting Agriculture Through Better Planning

Protecting natural resources should never be viewed as being in opposition to agriculture.

Family farmers have long served as stewards of the land. Many already invest significant time and resources into conservation practices, nutrient management, soil health, and water protection.

Providing farmers with better tools for evaluating regional conditions can strengthen both environmental protection and agricultural success.

The goal is not additional bureaucracy.

The goal is better information that supports better decisions.

Introducing the National Farm Risk Management System (NFRMS)

To help meet this need, VYFA is developing the National Farm Risk Management System (NFRMS)—a voluntary framework designed to help communities, producers, policymakers, and agricultural partners better understand environmental and operational risk across diverse agricultural landscapes.

Rather than focusing solely on farm size, NFRMS encourages consideration of multiple factors, including:

• Watershed conditions

• Groundwater sensitivity

• Soil characteristics

• Regional agricultural density

• Infrastructure capacity

• Community resources

• Long-term sustainability

By bringing these factors together, the framework aims to promote proactive planning that benefits producers, rural communities, and natural resources alike.

No single group has all the answers.
