Why Farm Assessments Are the First Step Toward a Stronger, More Modern Agricultural Future

Across the country, small and mid-sized dairy and livestock farms are facing a growing challenge: they are being asked to compete in a rapidly changing agricultural economy while many are working with aging infrastructure, outdated equipment, limited technology access, and increasing financial pressures.

The reality is that many farms do not fail because farmers lack dedication, knowledge, or work ethic. Many farms struggle because they lack access to the right tools, resources, assessments, and modernization pathways needed to make informed decisions and secure the support necessary for long-term success.

This is why the Veterans & Young Farmers Alliance (VYFA) is developing a National Farm Assessment and Modernization Program.

Our mission is simple: identify the challenges farms face, create a roadmap for modernization, and connect farmers with the resources needed to strengthen their operations.

A farm assessment is more than an inspection. It is a comprehensive evaluation designed to understand the full picture of a farm’s operation, including:

  • Infrastructure needs

  • Equipment and technology gaps

  • Livestock and dairy facility improvements

  • Energy efficiency opportunities

  • Workforce and training needs

  • Financial readiness and funding barriers

  • Sustainability and long-term growth opportunities

For many small and mid-sized farms, modernization can feel out of reach. The cost of new equipment, improved facilities, automation, technology, and operational upgrades can be overwhelming without a clear plan.

That is where a structured assessment becomes a critical tool.

By identifying modernization priorities, farms can develop a strategic improvement plan that helps them pursue available state and federal resources, agricultural grants, loans, partnerships, and industry support.

The goal is not simply to evaluate farms—it is to create a pathway forward.

Through this program, VYFA plans to work with universities, agricultural extension programs, industry partners, financial organizations, and agricultural leaders to build a collaborative system that supports farmers where they are and helps them reach where they want to be.

Our initial pilot efforts will focus on Missouri and Arkansas, with plans to expand into additional agricultural states, including Wisconsin, where dairy production and agricultural innovation provide a strong opportunity to demonstrate the impact of this model.

These states will serve as a foundation for building a national framework that can help farms across the country better understand their needs, prepare for the future, and access the resources necessary to modernize.

The future of agriculture depends on strong, resilient farms. To build that future, we must first understand where farms stand today.

VYFA believes every farm deserves the opportunity to evaluate its challenges, identify its opportunities, and develop a realistic plan for growth.

The National Farm Assessment and Modernization Program is about more than modernization—it is about protecting the future of agriculture, supporting the farmers who feed our communities, and creating a stronger foundation for generations to come.

Together, we can modernize agriculture, strengthen rural communities, and build a future where farmers have the resources they need to succeed.
