Seeds of Service: Why the Veterans and Young Farmers Alliance is Raising the Call for a New Generation

The American landscape is changing, and not just in the ways we might see from a car window. Beneath the surface of our amber waves of grain and rolling dairy pastures, a crisis is unfolding. Our farming population is aging, the barriers to entry for new producers have never been higher, and the mental health of our rural neighbors is under unprecedented strain.
At the Veterans and Young Farmers Alliance (VYFA), we believe the solution to these challenges lies in a unique and powerful partnership: bringing together the disciplined service of our nation’s veterans with the innovative energy of young farmers under 40.
The Growing Challenge
The statistics tell a sobering story. The average age of a U.S. farmer is now nearly 58 years old. For every farmer under 35, there are six over 65. We are facing a massive "succession gap" that threatens our national food security.
When a young person or a veteran returning to civilian life wants to start a farm, they hit a wall. With farmland values averaging over $4,300 per acre nationally—and skyrocketing in productive regions—the dream of land ownership feels out of reach. Add to that the rising costs of equipment and the volatility of the market, and it’s clear: we are asking the next generation to do the impossible without a helping hand.
Why Veterans? Why Young Farmers?
Veterans and farmers share a common DNA. Both are driven by a sense of service, a commitment to their communities, and an incredible resilience in the face of hardship.
However, that resilience has a limit. The agricultural community currently faces a suicide rate roughly double that of the general population. Between the isolation of rural life and the financial pressure of a "bad year," the weight can become too much to bear alone.
Our Vision: A New Foundation
VYFA is a brand-new nonprofit, and while our journey is just beginning, our advocacy is rooted in three non-negotiable pillars:
Land & Legacy: We are advocating for legislative change and scholarships that help veterans and young farmers not just obtain land, but keep and maintain it through sustainable practices.
Holistic Education: Success in farming today requires more than knowing how to plant a crop. Our future workshops will cover the "business of the barn"—from complex budgeting and financing to the latest in agricultural technology.
Mental Health & Community: We are committed to shattering the "tough it out" stigma. We want to build a peer-to-peer network where veterans and young farmers support one another’s mental well-being as fiercely as they protect their harvests.
The Advocacy Behind the Proposal
We aren't just starting a nonprofit; we are drafting a Congressional Bill Proposal. We are taking these facts to Washington to demand that our leaders recognize the "National Security" value of a thriving, young, and healthy farming population.
Join Us at the Ground Level
We are currently in the "clearing the field" stage—building our board, gathering data, and raising the voices of those who have been unheard for too long. We don’t have all the programs established yet, but we have the mission, the heart, and the data to prove that change is necessary.
The future of our food, our land, and our veterans depends on what we do next. It’s time to plant the seeds for a stronger, younger, and more resilient American farm.
Will you stand with the Alliance?
