Personal Message from Founder Amy

On February 11th, I turn 51.

I’ve restarted my life more times than I ever planned to—not because I was chasing reinvention, but because sometimes survival demands change. What I know now is this: starting over isn’t weakness. It’s wisdom earned in real time.

I’ve learned that grit alone doesn’t protect your finances, your housing, or your future. What does help is learning, adapting, and being willing to try again—differently—when something no longer works.

I haven’t farmed the land myself.Roger has—co-founder and Vice President of VYFA, and the heart and soul behind the farming side of this work. His lived experience, hard lessons, and stories from the land help shape the future we’re building.

What I have done is live close enough to that reality to understand the difference between the fantasy people sell and the truth people live. I’ve seen what happens when farming—or life—is treated like an escape instead of a system. When people are told to “just start” without being given the tools to survive, grow, and stay standing.

That’s where farming became a metaphor for me—not a lifestyle I claim, but a lesson I respect.

You don’t skip seasons. You don’t plant without preparation. And you don’t build a sustainable life without structure, planning, and community.

After 50, something shifts. You stop chasing what sounds good and start building what holds. You give yourself permission to try new things, to walk away from what no longer fits, and to begin again—without shame.

That’s why VYFA exists.

Veterans and young farmers are often pointed toward agriculture as a solution without being given honest education, financial clarity, or realistic expectations. I’ve seen how fast that leads to burnout and loss—not because people aren’t capable, but because they were never given a map.

VYFA is about offering that map. Education before risk.Reality before romance. Community instead of isolation.

So this birthday isn’t about celebrating a number. It’s about honoring the courage to begin again.

I’m here to talk about starting over as many times as it takes—trying new paths, helping others along the way, and choosing progress over perfection. About continuing until you find peace. Until you feel steady. Until you feel whole.

If you’re resetting your life right now—at any age—you’re not behind.

You’re still becoming.
